States of Matter

Today we experimented with adding heat to water and corn kernels.

Ask me how water can turn from a solid to a liquid and a liquid to a gas.  OR a liquid to a solid.

This was a very fun experiment and we thought of many things we add heat to in order to make it edible.

Raz Kids

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I'm happy to inform you that your student has access to hundreds of eBooks using the school's subscription to www.raz-kids.com. Children can read and listen to books on Raz-Kids and even record themselves reading. After reading please take a quiz to check for comprehension. Although your child may be able to read all the words, they also need to be able to understand what they are reading. It is best if your child can reread the book until they answer all questions accurately.

Please note:  The levels on Raz kids do not match the levels we are reading in the classroom.  Please do not be alarmed if the level you child has been placed at is higher or lower than their home reading books.

To access your child's account, log in at https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login , teacher user name is lhoward65 and then click on your child’s name.

A Login card has been attached to the inside of their communication folder with the assigned password.  Please remember the goal is to read for at least fifteen minutes per day.

Monitor your child's progress:
You can see which books your child has been reading, send them messages, and review all their activity with our Parent Access area. Simply log in as your child, click the "Parents" link in the top right, and register today.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me at anytime.

Basic Needs

Today we discussed our 5 basic needs (Water, Air, Clothing, Shelter, Food).  We then discussed if LOVE was a 6th basic need or not.  There were many different opinions in our class.

Discuss at home if you think Love is a basic need to survive or not.

Lock Down Practice Today

Today we had a lock down practice.  We did a great job and sat quietly waiting for the police officer to open our door.  Please discuss this at home.

We Scare Hunger

WE SCARE HUNGER!

NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY, BUT IN CANADA 1 in 7 CHILDREN GO TO SCHOOL HUNGRY.  36% OF FOOD BANK USERS IN CANADA ARE CHILDREN AND YOUTH!

THIS HALLOWEEN, BE HUNGER HEROES
Take action this Halloween to collect non-perishable food items at school and in your community to help stop hunger before it strikes.

Starting on Tuesday October 15th, the Me to We club will begin to collect non-perishable food items. We will continue to collect non-perishable food items until November 4th. All food items will be donated to the Calgary food bank to help hungry Calgarians.

Classroom Challenge: Which classroom can collect the most non-perishable items?
As teachers collect donated goods from students during October 15th to November 4th, they will tally the amount collected. The class to collect the most food items will have their class picture proudly displayed on the Me to We club’s Hall of Fame display case for everyone to see!

Many food banks ask for the following non-perishable items:
  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Pasta
  • Canned fish and meat (Tuna, salmon, corned beef and chicken)
  • Stew and soup
  • Canned or dried beans
  • Canned fruit and vegetables
  • 100% fruit juice
  • Canned or powdered milk
  • Cereals
  • Tomato sauce
  • Peanut butter
  • Baby products (formula, diapers, baby food)

Thanks for your support!

Home Reading

Dear Families,

Today we are sending home your child’s first home reading books for homework. It is important that your child reads for a minimum of 10-15 minutes each night. Please ensure you are reading with your child every night – practicing reading aloud to an adult ensures students are improving their fluency and reading words correctly each time.

Two books will be sent home each day and should be returned the next day so your child can exchange them for new books. New books will only be sent home when the previous days books are returned. If you would like to keep one of the books for 2 days that’s ok; however, varying the books a child reads help increase their word knowledge and deepens their understanding of the books they read. If you choose to keep the books at home to practice, please ensure the Communication Folder is returned every day.

Your child will begin to gain confidence as a reader and develop reading fluency by reading a variety of different types of books.
Always be sure to ask your child questions about the book before, during, and after reading to better judge if they understand what they are reading.

As we are just beginning our Guided Reading program in the classroom, we are still adjusting reading levels. If you strongly feel a book is too easy or too difficult, please write a little note and send it to school. Remember, a reading level includes being able to fluently read the words on the page and demonstrate your understanding of the text by confidently responding to a variety of questions about the story.

Have fun reading together!
